To design a property of rare individuality is certainly tough these days… we’ve seen countless split level interiors, thousands of clever façades and enough uses of narrow spaces to last us a life time, but when all 3 of these à la mode trends are fused with such outlandish flair, we’re understandably blown away. Studio Rolf.fr and Zecc Architects have achieved something truly unique with this renovation of a 100 year old, neglected Rotterdam home. Empty for almost 30 years, the building has been entirely gutted, virtually creating an entire new house within its walls, whilst the façade – masonry, frames and windows – has been blacked out, with newly created windows piercing the exterior with a perplexing characteristic. The designers play with the space and traditional convention inside – leaving out elements such as railings, doors and banisters to create mischievous voids, achieving unique spaces that offer a flowing, relaxed semblance to the house. Challenging, daringly different and consummately executed, the Black Pearl is as rare, individual and sublime a renovation as you may ever see…
